Portland, your weather is breaking my heart.

Let's run away.

By run away, I mean go to the beach house. And hibernate inside.

We can lounge around and watch a marathon of march madness games while indulging in comfort foods. I'm thinking baked mac 'n cheese. Or nachos.

Sunday morning I'll have to prepare for my big meeting later this week. And you will have to respond to emails. This is to be accomplished with mimosas from under a down comforter while listening to this mix and the waves.

5-mile run. Smoked trout hash. More basketball. More mimosas.

Time is irrelevant. Naps are a must.

We will survive this dismal week.

If that fails, let's take a 3-week vacation to Bali.

I just finished listening to the Fresh Air interview of Suze Rotolo.

I sat in my car at destination to finish listening to the interview. I am a huge sucker for realistic love stories. The ones that include all aspects of relationships like you didn't know his real last name until he was sauced and dropped his wallet.

And, usually I hate Ms. Gross' speculations about her interviewees but the mentor-mentee part was fairly relevant. I dated an artist 10 years my senior and fell into the cycle of admiration and constant learning but there was balance. There were things that I was much better at. Qualities that he admired and constantly learned from too. Balance.

Have a listen. And then re-listen to the entire Freewheelin' Bob Dylan album.

Honey Panna Cotta

Hosted my weekly dinner party last night and ended the meal with my favorite dessert, honey panna cotta.

Roaring success. Horrible picture.

Highly recommend making it now.

Honey Panna Cotta w/Blood Oranges

2 cups whipping cream

1 packet unflavored gelatin

1 1/3 cup of greek yogurt

1/2 cup honey

4 tablespoons moscato

pinch salt

4 Blood Oranges - Supremed (instructions below)

1/4 cup Moscato

Place 1/2 cup cream in a small sauce pan and sprinkle with the gelatin. Let stand about 20 minutes or until softened.

Stir together remaining 1 1/2 cups of cream, greek yogurt and honey in a sauce pan over medium heat until mixture comes to a gentle boil. Remove from heat.

Heat gelatin mixture over medium-low heat until gelatin dissolves completely. Whisk gelatin mixture into cream. Add Moscato and a pinch of salt.

Divide mixture among ramekins or wine glasses and refrigerate until set, 4-6 hours.

Supreme blood oranges and toss with 1/4 cup of Moscato. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

You can either turn the Panna Cottas out onto individual plates or eat from the ramekins. Top with blood oranges to serve.

Do yourself a favor and drink the remaining moscato from the orange bowl.

Devour Panna Cottas.

Thank me later.

When I talk about moving back to NY people wince at the living conditions.

Small, cramped expensive spaces.

To me, this sounds idyllic.

There are only two places I spend about 95% of my time in my apartment. The couch and the bed. Sometimes, I have to walk from the couch to the kitchen to refill my wine glass. In a 375 sq. ft apartment I wouldn't even have to get up to do that. I could revel in some ultimate laziness.

Anyway, this space is clever and amazing. I would like to drink wine in the garden and live in it forever.

The butter is key. I add lemon zest and ample fresh cracked black pepper right before serving.

Sometimes (like tonight) I just have that for dinner with a glass of wine.

And it is delightful.

Brussels Sprouts with White Beans and Pecorino
from Bon Appétit

8 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
2 pounds brussels sprouts, trimmed, cut in half lengthwise
6 garlic cloves, chopped
1 cup low-salt chicken broth
1 15-ounce can cannellini (white kidney beans), drained
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
1 cup (about 4 ounces) coarsely grated young pecorino (such as a young Pecorino Toscano)

Heat 3 tablespoons oil in heavy large skillet over high heat. When just about to smoke, add half of brussels sprouts. Cook until brown, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Transfer to large bowl. Heat 3 tablespoons oil in same skillet. Add remaining brussels sprouts, reduce heat to medium-high, and cook until brown, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Transfer brussels sprouts to same bowl.

Add remaining 2 tablespoons oil to skillet; increase heat to high. Add garlic; sauté until brown, stirring constantly, about 1 minute. Add broth and brussels sprouts. Cook until brussels sprouts are crisp-tender, stirring frequently, about 3 minutes. Add beans and butter; stir until butter melts and broth is reduced to glaze, about 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in cheese.

I just got back from an unexpected trip to NYC. I was born there and lived there for a decent portion of my formative years.

You know, the ones that define your personality and lifestyle.

While I love Portland, it has never really felt like home. I am reminded of this when I go home and dressing "up" isn't rare but de rigueur. I feel out of place in Portland wearing heels for day, ironing my clothes, never leaving the house without a spot of Jo Malone's "Red Roses" and sporting bright red lips at my 7am meeting.

The fact that I even have a 7am weekly professional meeting makes me feel like a fringe Oregonian.

My plates are limoges, my couch queen anne. I realized last week the family forks I feed my cat wet food with go for $157.00 each on ebay.

I shake hands when I meet people and enjoy a good cheek kiss with friends and family. I swear, banter and have definite opinions. I like tradition. I value manners. I take my meals in courses. And I am embracing all of these things.

I might even go buy a new black wool shift and attend a catholic mass in latin.

All this is distinctly me and quite normal somewhere but seems forced and awkward here.

Like these ridiculous shoes. I love them and they are coming with me to that catholic mass with that new wool shift, my jo malone and flamboyant red lips. I will meet new people and shake their hands; kiss them on the cheek when we are friends. We can eat our meals in courses and say "please & thank you" as we pass our dishes from the left.

Sailing

Went sailing in the San Francisco Bay this past weekend.

The weather was great but that water is rough.

We experienced every phase from calm to turbulent and back again. By the end we were soaked, cold and thoroughly tired.

Sailing is a lot of work.

Highlights include getting up close and personal with the dino babies (aka: container cranes) and the new bay bridge project. I am hopelessly infatuated with container cranes.

In Kuala Lumpur visiting my sister for the next two weeks.

On our first full day here Ror took us to the Batu Caves.

I saw my first monkey in real life and also my first monkey attack. I am officially afraid of them. They are pests.

We ate the best Indian food I have ever had made by Shaneet, a good friend of Rorey and Cody. He owns a restaurant here. He said it was made with love and our bellies were full with love.

We watched the world cup at a local bar.
At night!

It was refreshing that the US game started at 10pm instead of 7am.

Tonight, drinks at Petronas Towers.

This weekend relaxing at the Perhentian Islands.

Next week Cambodia and Angkor Wat.

I am an unapologetic hater of resort lines. Always have been.

I remember studying them in college and thinking they were bougie and awkward.

The colors and cuts are often absurd. Silhouettes unlike anything you would ever normally wear. Resort lines were like a bad homage to gilligan's island.

I feel like all I am doing these days are work related things so this is appropriate.

Most of my clients are private practice alternative healthcare providers. Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, Naturopaths, Yogis, LMT's etc.

I have three logos in process of people that want scientific drawings of plants. I am trying to talk two out of it seeing as it is hugely trendy. On the other hand it is also highly applicable to their fields of practice.

Tough call.

I think the end result is going to be me finding three entirely different spins on clients that want the exact same thing.

I have been taking breaks heading down to Powells for research. Last night on one of these trips I found this delightful little book from 1902.

It will be my source of inspiration for the next 6 weeks of logo and web work.

Death Valley, CA

Spent three days drying out in Death Valley for the weekend.

It was an amazing time.

The weather was beautiful. Sunny skies and temperatures hovering around 100 degrees.

I walked through canyons and salt flats, drove on rough roads to see ghost towns and sailing stones, camped under the full moon and stars, saw some of the most vibrant desert wildflowers, ran into a few kit foxes and lizards and drank more water then I knew I was capable of.

It was perfect.

I only wish I brought more oranges to eat. I craved them the entire time I was there.

Lazed on the beach and read a Vanity Fair cover-2-cover while the boy surfed.

Looked at some catamarans.

Enjoyed the near perfect sunny, high 70s weather.

Bouncing Back

I have had an intense couple of weeks. Part of it included a move to a new place. 24-hours in one of my kitties Björn got out and hasn't come home. (Hard way to learn my front door doesn't always completely latch.)

The day I posted the cat standing video me and my old roommate spent a half hour trying to teach Björn how to stand like that cat. Then we joked about making him wear a suit, tie and monocle.

Part of me hasn't wanted to replace that video.

It is time.

I have done everything I can and I think all my new and old neighbors are sick of me roaming the neighborhood at all hours looking for him.

I am about 2 weeks away from becoming a Cathy cartoon.

After work I tried to change into my magenta jeans and tank for dinner with friends.

Funny thing...where are my magenta jeans? Missing.

I put on a pair of blue american apparel unisex slim slacks instead and instantly remembered that i love these pants!

They were buried in my jean pile. I'm an out-of-sight, out-of-mind kinda gal so it is easy for me to forget that I love things.

How about having a boyfriend that can wear the same jeans as you?
Is that weird or cute?

I think these two look cute. But maybe that is creepy.
